1981 $5 AZIZ TAHA 4TH SERIES & 1982 $100 AZIZ TAHA 5TH SERIES (BLINDMAN SERIES)

Today I have received some of my bank notes back from PMG and i was delighted to have achieved high grades for my bank notes.

In the span of just four years from 1981 to 1984 our former governor Tan Sri Dato Abdul Aziz Bin Haji Taha served as Bank Negara Governor with two different series types of bank notes introduced during his reign and it was consider rare and much sought after by collectors.

1981 $5 Aziz Taha 4th series B/19 1st prefix. One of the important "Key Date" for Malaysian banknotes series.
Most of these banknotes are toned or foxed with yellowish stain especially the $5 banknotes. It is extremely difficult to have achieved grade PMG66 EPQ.

1982 $100 Aziz Taha 5th series also known as "Blindman series" with the prefix "ZA" 1st prefix.

MALAYSIA PARLIAMENT COINS SUPER GRADE NGC MS68

I'm extremely surprise to have received two parliament coins 1981 50sen & 20sen graded as MS68 by NGC and this grade are considered as "Proof Like (PL)". Mine are the only ONE in the world to have achieved MS68 according to the NGC population report for both 50sen & 20sen respectively thus far.

The rest of the other coins I received today from NGC are :-

1)1981 50sen = MS68
2)1981 20sen = MS68
3)1988 50sen = MS67
4)1988 50sen = MS66
5)1982 50sen = MS66
6)1976 20sen = MS66
7)1983 50sen = MS64

Super grade 50s MS68 considered as Proof Like only 1 according to NGC population report.

Super grade 20s MS68 considered as Proof Like only 1 according to NGC population report.

Tough grade to achieve 50s MS67 considered as Brilliant Uncirculated (BU).

IMPORTANT KEY DATES FOR MALAYSIAN NUMISMATICS, GRADED COINS AND BANK NOTES PART 1

Many newbies (new collectors) have similar questions in their mine. What to buy be it banknotes, coins or gold coins. Certainly you can't buy "everything" from the first year of issue till today. But some useless "junk" today may turn out to be "precious gem" in future.

Some commemorative issue price have surge sky high whereas some are stagnant. Let's look at the factors that drove the prices upwards.

1)Mintage - the least number of issue (Key Dates)

2)Popularity - even though the mintage aren't the lowest but the commemorative are popular.

3)Errors - in minting / manufacturing

* I will elaborate on each category for Bank notes, Coins and Gold Coins on my next posting.

Many newbies did not actually know what they are buying, they tend to believe what the seller tell them. Many unscrupulous dealers tend to over grade their items and sell them at higher price to the unsuspecting newbies.

Some banknotes are "washed" and "pressed" and claimed they are "UNC" condition and were selling them at exorbitant prices. Some notes have some faint fold due to counting marks or rounded edges (four corners) still claimed to be UNC. Some may have yellow stains due to foxing or aging are still graded as UNC. These are some of the examples of "over grading" by unscrupulous dealers.

If you can't distinguish the difference between the original banknotes and "modified" (washed and pressed) banknotes please refrain from buying until you have learn the know-how. But on the safest side you can still protect yourself by buying only "graded" banknotes or coins by world recognized third party grading company "NGC" & "PCGS" (for coins) and "PMG" & "PCGS" (for banknotes).

Of course there are price difference between graded and non graded banknotes and coins. When you decided to sell your collections (graded ones) you will be rest assured the demand are more even from foreign collectors and the price are higher compare with the non graded ones.

Examples of graded coins and banknotes as below :-

1st Series 1967

An Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) note is, in the opinion of PMG graders, original and has not been physically, chemically, or materially processed to lend the appearance of a higher grade.

1999 10th Series Ali Abul Hassan centre signature "ZA" replacement note.

An Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) note is, in the opinion of PMG graders, original and has not been physically, chemically, or materially processed to lend the appearance of a higher grade.

Very tough to achieve the grade of MS67 (Mint State) and is considered as Brilliant Uncirculated (B.U.)

MALAYSIA 1976 1SEN COPPER

Obverse

It was another record sale for the 1976 1sen with an error planchet that made of copper. It was recently auctioned on Ebay US with a realized price of USD2975.00 or RM9371.25 (exchange rate 3.15 = USD1.00) on the 10th November 2013 with 29bids.

There were only four pieces achieved the highest grade of MS66 RD (Red) according to the NGC population report thus far.

On 27th March 2013, the exact same coin but with one rung lower of MS65 RD (Red) graded by PCGS was auctioned by Singapore Monetarium Auctions with a realized price of SGD3017.30 or RM7694.11 (exchange rate 2.55 = SGD1.00) inclusive of buyer's premium and GST in Singapore.

According to Steven Tan's catalogue it was stated that there were no more than 100pcs minted.

Steven Tan catalogue

So what's so special about this 1sen 1976 copper coin ? It was an error planchet material used. The correct metal should be copper-clad-steel.

FYI, the 1sen coin was minted from 1967 to 1973 using copper but then it was changed to a different material with less expensive metal "copper-clad-steel". Because the cost of raw commodity - copper went up hence making a one cent coin more expensive than the price of 1sen. So in the year 1973 half of the entire mintage of 21,400.385 million pieces of 1sen coins were made by copper-clad-steel and copper.

For those "layman" who want to search for this 1976 1sen copper just use a magnet. The copper-clad-steel 1sen coin are attracted to magnet whereas the copper 1sen are NOT attracted to magnet.

Happy hunting !
