TRIGOMETRIC AUCTION 15TH MARCH 2015 - SURPRISES AND DISSAPOINTMENTS

With the recent concluded Trigometric auction there were many surprises where those you dont expect were making staggering realized price. And those hot items where you expect making new highs were left under perform.

There are many blogs/websites had reported about several big notes and 2 pieces of 1953 QE II coins ended with hundreds of thousands of Ringgit Malaysia (RM) realized price and by now everyone knew about these amazing achievements.

Therefore i chose not to repeat on blogging about them otherwise my article may sound similar like "copy and paste".  So i chose to write about those lacklustre items that once consider as laggards but now had sprung to life with remarkable realized prices.

Realized price RM1800 + 15% (BP)

Realized price RM1500 + 15% (BP) for 2pcs

Begining of 2014 these 12th series RM50 Zeti Aziz (with Merdeka Logo on the back) were selling for RM80.00 per piece.

Realized price RM800 + 15% (BP) "low number"

Once upon a time this replacement note ZAC was selling for RM15.00 per piece (for normal S/N).

Realized price RM8000 + 15% (BP). Ali Abul Hassan side signature

Realized price RM900 + 15% (BP). 1972 RM10 Ismail Ali 2nd series.

Malaysian banknotes from the 1st series (1967) to the 4th series (1981) remain very strong.

Realized price RM2700 + 15% (BP) for 2pcs. 5th series Aziz Taha

During the 1st quarter of 2014 these were selling for a mere RM500 each (UNC ungraded).

Realized price RM5000 + 15% (BP). 5th series Aziz Taha

This piece of RM500 were selling for RM2500 (UNC ungraded) in 1st quater of 2014.

Realized price RM2200 + 15% (BP).

The appreciation of this proof TAR coin is unbelievable and i'm at the loss of words.

Realized price RM2000 + 15% (BP). 50 Dollars 21 March 1953, Queen Elizabeth II, (KNB4a:P4a) Serial no. A/9 572854 With stain GVF

It is about time collectors starts to realize that King George V, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth banknotes are laggards and has been asleep for a very long time since their peak in 2007-2008.

1961 $10 Buffalo still command very strong price and still the collector favorites and the prices still did not wane

MALAYA BRITISH BORNEO 1961 $10 BIG "B/6" LAST PREFIX

This is the rarest buffalo note in the series - The last prefix Big "B/6".

The series of prefix Big "B" start from B/1, B/2, B3, B/4, B5 and Last prefix B/6, there are only six serial numbers in total thus make it scarce. 

This piece of note is in original VF condition - no wash, no hole and no tear. Among the buffalo banknote series the prefix Big B/6 command the highest premium because of its rarity. You hardly seen them in auction perhaps once in the blue moon. High grade or UNC condition are extremely hard to find and if you do it will probably cost you a bomb. 

Base on PMG population report, there are a total of 52pcs (as at time of writing) graded for Large Serial Number "B" or Big B (Pick 9c) it comprises B/1, B/2, B/3, B/4, B/5 and B/6. The highest graded in the whole "B" series are - 1piece (66EPQ) and follow by 3pieces (64) and 5pieces (58EPQ) and etc.

If you're searching for a piece of Big B for your collection then you will know how hard to find one and i want to wish you happy hunting that is the thrill and fun of collecting banknotes.

MALAYSIAN COLLECTORS VERSUS SPECULATORS

During the good times when the stocks exchange were making new highs almost every week easy money were make from the stock exchange and everyone were more generous in spending money in numismatics thus driving up the prices. Those non collectors were attracted with making fast and easy money also jumped into the numismatics band wagon and became collectors or speculators and everything rises. Numismatics are more tied to the economy or level of discretionary income and everyone were happy with the hobby while speculators kept speculating and push up the prices and collectors were delighted with their increasing value of their collections. What hobby are more rewarding than numismatics huh ?

What happen to the "numismatics economy" during slow months ? Numismatics do share some common similarity with the stock market and that makes it more interesting to be in this hobby. It has the speculators and collectors that kept vintage and expensive banknotes/coins (blue chips in the stock exchange) and it has its up and down trend too.

During the slow months speculators that unable to hold on their inventory of banknotes/coins (mostly are modern replacement notes) will liquidate their stocks thus flooding the market and weaken the prices. And those small time speculators follow suits to cut-losses afraid the prices will drop further and this has caused a chain-reaction to other speculators too. The greatest impact were on modern replacement notes but nevertheless the negative environment also affect other vintage notes too.

Whereas the "smart money" will come pouring into vintage notes/coins from the collectors because they knew that is the best time to buy when everyone are selling and rare notes/coins will surface during bad times and in contrast it was very hard to find rare vintage notes/coins during good times because collectors held them tightly in their collections and they does not need money.

So you ought to know the timing when you should buy and certainly you dont buy when everyone are buying along side with you.
