MORE FREQUENT OF NEW ISSUES OF COMMEMORATIVE COINS FROM 2016 AND BEYOND ?

Malaysian coin collectors / hobbyist have every reasons to be excited about for looking forward to collect new issues. From this year onwards it seem like there are more new issues coming out from BNM more frequent than the past years.

So far there were already two commemorative coins issued for this year, on the 28th Feb the new issue was World Table Tennis Championship (International theme) and 16th April 70th Anniversary of Radio Televisyen Malaysia (Domestic theme). And if the speculation is true the next coming issue will be the 50th Anniversary of Yayasan Sabah expected to launch in between end of May to June'16.

World Table Tennis Championship coin issued on 28th Feb 2016.

70th Anniversary of Radio Televisyen Malaysia coin issued on 16th April 2016.

However, there are some changes in the new issues and reduction in mintages. It is obvious that BNM no longer issue commemorative gold coins and the mintage of single silver proof coin has reduced to 500pieces from 2000peices and 10,000pieces from 25,000pieces for Nordic gold coin B.U. (Coin card) respectively. BNM no longer issue Set of 3 comprises of Gold (1/4oz, 999 gold), Silver proof & Nordic Gold proof and individual "stand-alone" Single Gold coin (1/4oz. 999 gold). With the reduction of mintages and without the gold coins it would be easily absorbed by the market forces.

Therefore BNM could issue more frequent new commemorative coins in a year and most likely would be six times this year (bi-monthly) compare with the previous three times in a year.

Exciting times ahead for Malaysian collectors.

Enjoy.....

AUCTION PRICE REALIZED - THE WORLD TEAM TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016 COPPER COIN

This was the first commemorative coin issue of 2016 - The World Team Table Tennis Championships 2016. This international tournament was represented by more than 100 countries. It was held from February 28 to March 6 at Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

Unfortunately, there was no gold coin issued to mark this event, however it was replaced by Copper coin instead. This series comprises of Single proof silver (500pcs minted), Set of 2- Silver proof & Proof Nordic Gold (2000pcs minted), Copper coin Matte finish (150pcs minted) & Copper coin Proof-Like finish (150pcs minted), Nordic Gold coin Brilliant Uncirculated (10000pcs minted in coin cards).

In this issue we have seen some changes in issuing by BNM, for instances, there were no gold coins issued, copper coins were issued with two different finishing - Matte & Proof Like, the mintage for single Silver proof coins has reduced significantly to 500pcs only and that is a major reduction and the same goes for the Nordic gold (BU) coin issued in coin cards with only 10000pcs minted a reduction from 25000pcs base from the past issues.

It was rather disappointing that the public was unable to purchase the copper coins over the counter due to its extremely low mintage, therefore it was put on auction with 60pcs for Matte & 60pcs for PL finishing.

Set of 2 comprises of Silver proof coin & Nordic gold proof coin (2000pcs minted)

MALAYSIA 2015 ASEAN SUBMIT NEW COINS ISSUE 27TH APRIL 2015

This is the first 10-sided polygon shaped coin with coloured images on both sides and the flags of the ten ASEAN countries are depicted circling the centre of the coin and this is the most beautiful coins ever produced by BNM thus far.

The mintage of this issue are exceptionally high because Malaysia as the chairman of Asean are giving away as gifts to the visiting foreign delegates from ten asean countries that came for the submit in Kuala Lumpur.

The mintage for this issue are :-

1)Single gold : 500pcs (remain the same)
2)Silver coloured proof : 5000pcs (increase from 2000pcs)
3)Set of 3 : 2000sets (increase from 750sets)
4)Set of 2 : 2000sets (increase from 750sets)
5)Nordic gold coin card : 25000pcs (remain the same)

Many collectors include myself love the design especially the coloured proof silver coin very much, however the coin/banknotes dealers were hesitated to buy their normal quotas considering the high mintage.

BNM Penang @ 5.45am not a single soul (image courtesy by Lee Boon Beng).

The above picture speak a thousand words. There are not a single person queuing up in front of BNM Penang at 5.45am this is an unbelievable scene. For every new issues people starts to queue up from 3.00pm the day before until the following day 9.00am when BNM open for business. This was how crazy the collectors are through out Malaysia where BNM branch are located.

BNM has significantly increases the mintage for the new issues from 2009 onwards due to the overwhelming demand from collectors. Now everyone wonders is this the new normal of higher mintage coming from BNM for future issues ?

Another worthy point to ponder, how many sets are left to the public after deducting the gifts to those foreign delegates and our own Malaysian government officials, BNM and museum archives ?

For those dealers that refrained from buying this issue considering the high mintage and are afraid the price would not rise perhaps you're right or maybe you're wrong. Well, only time will tell.....

Happy Reading.

THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF MALAYSIA-CHINA DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

Today 27th June 2014 is the issuance day of the THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF MALAYSIA-CHINA DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS coins.

And Malaysian collectors are a crazy bunch of fanatic collectors. They have started to queue at Bank Negara Malaysia Penang Branch since yesterday (26th June) 3.00pm in the afternoon and the BNM open for business at 9.00am today morning, that mean they have queued for some 30hours, can you believe it ?
I couldn't find any words best describe these types of collectors, perhaps you could call them fanatics, insane or "mat rempits collectors".

I reached BNM this morning at 8.30am just to have a feel of the atmosphere and to meet up with some friends there but i knew i couldn't have the chance to buy anything.

The scene from BNM Penang branch this morning 8.30am.

THE STAR newspaper 28th June 2014.

These are crazy bunch of Malaysian collectors queuing  patiently under the hot sun of 36% celsius for hours and eighty percent were left with disappointment when the stocks ran out by 10.30am.

Set of 3 mintage 750sets

Set of 2 mintage 750sets

Single Gold mintage 500piece

Single Silver mintage 2000pieces

Nordic Gold mintage 25,000pieces

Many of these sets (half of its mintage) were brought to China and presented as a gift to the chinese government by our Malaysian delegates to commemorate the 40th anniversary Malaysia China bilateral ties on 30th May 2014. Therefore only half of its mintages were available for our domestics numismatics markets hence the supply were not sufficient for the hungry collectors.
