MALAYSIA COMMEMORATIVE COINS

Collecting commemorative is all about mintages. However i find many of our own Malaysian commemorative coins and coins sets are too cheap to ignore ! Collectors doesn't realize the small mintage they carries versus the large pool of collectors in Malaysia and Singapore however i dont have the exact numbers of collectors for the two countries combined but given the fact that Malaysia's population of 28millions + Singapore's population of 6millions equal to 34millions. Assuming there are just 3% (percent) of collectors that work out to be 1.020million collectors for both countries combined.

The modern commemorative coins especially from 2003 to 2012 are extremely small in numbers issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). The single gold have the least mintage of all then follow by set of 3 (comprises of gold+silver+nordic gold) and Set of 2 (silver & nordic gold) and lastly single proof silver coins.

Generally the numbers issued for single silver proof coins are between 200pcs to 350pcs and the Set of 2 are between 150sets to 300sets only. Many collectors were unhappy and complaint to BNM for not able to get them because of the small numbers issued. Thus from 2013 onwards BNM increases the mintage to 1000pcs for silver coins and 750sets for Set 2.

Furthermore in 2013 BNM start to introduce colored silver coin with full one ounce with pure .999 silver from previous 25gms of .925 silver. The issue price have also increased by RM50.00 for that reason.

However the Set of 2 and single proof silver coins are the favorites because they are more affordable and the jump are the most incredible on the secondary market.

2004 100th Year of TAR single silver 200pcs. Set 2 mintage 300pcs only.

2007 50th anniversary of Merdeka single silver 200pcs. Set 2 1000sets only.

2007 Installation of Agong XIII single silver 200pcs. Set 2 300sets only.

2007 200th Year anniversary of Police Force single silver 350pcs. Set 2 200sets only.

2008 50th anniversary of RMAF single silver 350pcs. Set 2 200sets only.

2008 100th anniversary of St. John ambulance single silver 350pcs. Set 2 200sets only.

2009 International Year of Astronomy single silver 350pcs. Set 2  200sets only.

2009 50th anniversary of BNM single silver 400pcs. Set 2  3500sets many were given as gifts to VIPs.

2009 75th anniversary of NAVY single silver 300pcs. Set 2  200sets only.

2010 50th anniversary of Bungaraya single silver 400pcs. Set 2  600sets only.

2010 125th anniversary of JUPEM single silver 300pcs. Set 2  200sets only.

2010 125th anniversary of KTM single silver 300pcs. Set 2  200sets only.

2011 50th anniversary of WWF single silver 350pcs. Set 2  300sets only.

2014 40th anniversary Malaysia-China Diplomatic relations single silver 2000pcs. Set 2  750sets.

2013 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FORMATION OF MALAYSIA

This one is the hottest commemorative coin issued by Malaysia Central Bank in recent years. Malaysia Day is celebrated on 16 September every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation which comprises 11 states in Malaya and two states in Borneo, namely Sabah and Sarawak.

Collectors were seen queuing since 6pm the day before until the bank was open at 9.00am the next day for the sale of the coins. Within two hours everything were snapped up.

The proof set of 3 with mintage of only 500sets minted were the favourite of the collectors.

The single proof 1/4oz. (7.96gms) gold coin with mintage of 750pcs minted wasn't in high demand among the collectors mainly because of the high premium over spot (USD1320.00 per ounce, exchange rate RM3.30 = USD1.00) against the issue price RM1800.00. This single coin were deemed too expensive and over valued.

The proof set of 2 (silver & nordic gold) with the mintage of 1000pcs minted were clearly the favourite by the collectors and dealers. Dealers were able to flip with almost 100% profit on the secondary market immediately. And it was sold out within 30minutes of opening.

The proof single silver with the mintage of 10,000pcs were the first coloured silver coin and with .999 pure silver minted in one ounce (31.10gms) ever produced by Malaysia. Usually the silver coins come in 21gms and contains .925 silver for every commemorative issues. I was told that up to 5000 pieces of this silver coins was given as a gift to VIPs during a function held in Sabah & Sarawak (East Malaysia) on the 16th & 17th Sept 2013 by the Prime Minister to mark the occasion of Malaysia Formation Day celebration.

The Nordic gold coin or coin card with the mintage of 25,000pcs was the most popular among the young and amateur collectors as it was the cheapest entry level into this hobby of numismatics thus making everyone affordable to collect. And it was not surprising that it was sold out within two hours upon opening of sales. I was told that this coin card was also given as a gift to every attendees during the function in Sabah and Sarawak.
