MONETARIUM SINGAPORE AUCTION #15 ON 26TH MARCH 2015

Here are some of the highlights from the recent Monetarium Singapore Auction on 26th March 2015 with realized prices. Presently collectors are having more interests in Malaya and Straits Settlements banknotes and prices are steadily rising.

Exchange rate : 2.69 from RM to SGD

Buyer's Premium : 15% live bid and 18% internet bid

SGD12,000 + 15%. 

Extremely rare piece of banknote especially without the chop. 

The first notes consigned by the Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya were for the value of $1, $5 and $10 and dated 1st January 1940. Of these issues, a large quantity of $1 notes (1940 Green colour) and $5 notes (1940 blue colour) was despatched to Malaya before the Japanese invation on 8th December 1941 but were all seized by the Germans. 

When British forces reoccupied Singapore in Septemeber 1945, they found all the abandoned notes of this series (1940 series) except for a bundle of one thousand of the notes captured in Penang, in the vaults of the Japanese sub-treasury. Nevertheless, all stocks were destroyed in 1946, as it was feared that the notes seized by the Germans might be handed over to their Japanese allies, ready to be passed into circulation when the notes became current. There is no evidence of these notes ever reaching Malaya. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese government issued the famous banana notes to replace the Malayan dollar as legal tender.

British forces landed at Penang and Singapore on 3rd Septemeber 1945 and gradually reoccupied the whole of Malaya. It was decided that no value should be accorded to the Japanese banana money.

However the $10 1940 (purple colour) was uncompromised and eventually went into circulation after the war and remained legal tender until it was phased out by the new currency - 1941 $10 KGVI red colour. This banknote was in circulation for only a year.

Here are some of the highlights from Mavin auction with recently concluded realized prices.

From my perspective Malaya and Straits Settlements banknotes are back in demand again with high realized prices. Finally collectors are focusing back on "history" and "heritage" where the rich values of these banknotes lies, that is the most important fundamentals of collecting numismatics - "VALUES".

Whereas for modern Malaysia banknotes i regarded them as "beauty contest" whoever could achieve highest grade.

TRIGOMETRIC AUCTION 15TH MARCH 2015 - SURPRISES AND DISSAPOINTMENTS

With the recent concluded Trigometric auction there were many surprises where those you dont expect were making staggering realized price. And those hot items where you expect making new highs were left under perform.

There are many blogs/websites had reported about several big notes and 2 pieces of 1953 QE II coins ended with hundreds of thousands of Ringgit Malaysia (RM) realized price and by now everyone knew about these amazing achievements.

Therefore i chose not to repeat on blogging about them otherwise my article may sound similar like "copy and paste".  So i chose to write about those lacklustre items that once consider as laggards but now had sprung to life with remarkable realized prices.

Realized price RM1800 + 15% (BP)

Begining of 2014 these 12th series RM50 Zeti Aziz (with Merdeka Logo on the back) were selling for RM80.00 per piece.

Realized price RM800 + 15% (BP) "low number"

Once upon a time this replacement note ZAC was selling for RM15.00 per piece (for normal S/N).

Malaysian banknotes from the 1st series (1967) to the 4th series (1981) remain very strong.

During the 1st quarter of 2014 these were selling for a mere RM500 each (UNC ungraded).

The appreciation of this proof TAR coin is unbelievable and i'm at the loss of words.

MALAYA 1942 KGVI AND MALAYSIA 2001 RM5 ZETI "ZA" REPLACEMENT NOTE

Buying opportunity arises during the recent stock exchange crash due to the international oil price plunge to USD58 per barrel (as at time of writing). Numismatics are tied to the share market and once the share market crashed everyone lose confident on the economy and are scared to spend money coupled with some losses in the stock market.

Speculators are selling to make ends meet so the same goes to some weak collectors are disposing and there is where good items comes out. Then the "smart money" emerge to grab them.

I managed to purchase some good items recently.

Malaya 1942 $50 KGVI in original VF condition, unwash, unpress and uncrop.

This piece of banknote Malaya 1942 $50 KGVI in its original condition was a good find. There are plenty of "washed and pressed" of these notes in the market where i often came across. And i rejected them because once washed the blue color ink were smeared on the side of the note and make the note look bluish instead of the original beige color.

2001 RM5 Zeti Aziz "ZA" replacement papermoney banknotes

I bought a stack of 100pcs run of 2001 RM5 Zeti Aziz 11th series "ZA" replacement notes. The reason i bought this stack as it was the last RM5 papermoney before it was replaced by RM5 polymer notes.  This series "ZA" is very hot item and you couldn't buy in stack during the peak.

I also found and bought half a stack 50pcs run of Malaysia 1981 RM1 Aziz Taha "Blindman" 5th series of "BA" replacement notes. This series are very popular among the collectors. I apologize i have forgotten to snap some pictures before i've sent all of them to PMG for grading as i was overwhelm by excitement.

MALAYA BRITISH ADMINISTRATION $10 1941 KING GEORGE VI 10 PIECES CONSECUTIVE GEM UNC

Once again I'm very fortunate to be able to feature this 10 pieces consecutive numbers of Malaya banknotes from the reign of King George VI 1939 - 1946 $10 in gem uncirculated condition with striking embossment on the texture of the notes. The pristine condition make it seem like it just came out from the printer Waterlow & Sons Ltd. UK. From my perspective point of view these 10 pieces of notes will easily obtain grade PMG 66epq to 67epq.

The colours of the 1940 $10 were changed in 1941 from purple (1940) to orange. The prefixes start from "A" to "J" with no "I". The orange notes start at A/83. However the purple notes (1940) preceed this from A/1 to A/82.

It is extremely hard to find even for a single piece in gem unc condition without foxing nor stains nonetheless in 10 pieces consecutive akin to striking a lottery.

Value ? MYR13,000 for PMG 66epq last transaction and estimated value for 67epq to be around MYR16,000 to MYR17,000.00.

Base on PMG population report there is one and only single piece of 1941 $10 KGVI achieved "STAR" designation from PMG with the grade 35EPQ * (Star) thus far and there are none other banknotes from Malaysia, Malaya nor Straits Settlements able to obtain Star (*) designation as at time of writing.

These notes belong to Mr.Xavier Tan from Singapore and i would like to thank him for his kindness to share with us one of his superb collection and wish him the best of luck for sending his notes to PMG for grading as this article been written.
