MALAYSIA 2007 / 2008 12TH SERIES RM50 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE LOW NUMBER 4 ZEROES 2 PIECES

I just received my another piece of RM50 50th Anniversary of Independence (Merdeka Goldline) back from PMG and was delighted to receive grade 67epq  prefix AA 0000 81 0 (technically speaking it has 5 zeroes). Hence i have 2 pieces of 4 zeroes in my collection now with AA 0000 92 0.

Currently the Merdeka Goldline is one of the hottest and most sought after by collectors and the price are surging due to its limited mintage of 20,000 pieces issued only.

Just about a month back a prominent numismatics dealer from Singapore bought 100 pieces in consecutive numbers of 2 zeroes AA00xxxxx of Merdeka Goline from a dealer in Penang who is also my good friend for MYR120,000.00 or equivalent to MYR1200.00 a piece, when this news broke out it sent the price sky rocketing. Many numismatics dealers believe there are still plenty of rooms for it to rise.

If you compare with the 1999 RM1 Ali Abul Hassan prefix "CR" with 50,000.00 pieces it has risen to RM8500.00 for grade 67epq then how much can Merdeka Goldline of 20,000.00 pieces can rise ?

Let's do some mathematics calculation, the "CR" mintage is 150 % (percent) more than the Merdeka Goldline that mean the price of "CR" is RM8500 + 150% (RM12,750) = RM21.250.00 each for Merdeka Goldline 67epq.

Let's keep our finger crossed for it to happen.

1986 RM20 JAFFAR HUSSEIN STACK

Currently everyone has gone bonkers over graded banknotes and coins and are competing on grades with each other. As i have mentioned before on my previous post that Malaysian numismatics has evolved and the Gen-Y collectors are demanding high quality stuffs for their collection unlike those days of our fore fathers. The atmosphere of collecting has changed and even the "old-timer" dealers are "panic" seeking and buying for graded banknotes/coins to keep for their inventory otherwise they themselves will be "phased" out too.

Now every dealers are looking to buy banknotes in "stacks" or hundred pieces because this is the only way able to achieve high grades. Nowadays it is not cheap to buy in stacks to keep for your inventory and it will cost you a fortune or the price of a house or an apartment. Try to imaging how much it would cost you for a stack of 1961 $10 Malaya and British Borneo (red buffalo) and a stack of 1999 RM1 Ali Abul Hassan (prefix CR). 

Hence for myself to keep abreast with time and demand from buyers i will be sending this pristine stack of RM20 1986 Jaffar Hussein prefix "TG" to PMG for grading. This banknotes was printed by Thomas De La Rue, UK.

I'm keeping my finger crossed to obtain high grades from PMG.

HOW MUCH ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY ?

How do you define a fair value if you want to buy a certain things be it banknotes, coins, gold coins and other numismatics stuffs ? Of course everyone would like to buy below market price or below catalogue price. But that is not necessarily the best method to gauge your buying strategy.

Just to give you one example, back in 2010 there was one collector who refused to buy the 50th Anniversary of Independence (Merdeka Goldline) for MYR350.00 each because the market price was around MYR320.00 during that time. So he was looking to buy below the market price between MYR280.00 to MYR300.00 and he criticized the seller of trying to rip him off so he didn't buy any.

Then in the following year 2011 he was still on bargain hunting for the Merdeka Goldine. During that time the market price shot up to MYR450.00 and he was offered by the same seller at the price of MYR480.00. He again turned down the seller and refused to buy at that price because he was searching for a bargain price at between MYR400.00 to MYR420.00 and once again he criticized the seller of wanting to rip him off hence he didn't buy any at all as he was fed up that he couldn't find any at his desire price.

2007 50th Anniversary of Independence (Merdeka Goldline)

Now at the time of writing this article the price of the 50th Anniversary of Independence (Merdeka Goldline) has shot up to MYR1200.00 for 2 zeroes (raw ungraded) and MYR1800.00 for 3 zeroes (raw ungraded).

Today the same collector is currently still searching to buy at MYR800.00 for 2 zeroes and MYR1200.00 for 3 zeroes. He has said he "doesn't mind" to pay MYR800.00 for 2 zeroes !

So sometimes it does not matter to pay a little higher even above the market price to obtain the item, otherwise you will miss the boat. Don't worry on the higher price you have paid now eventually the price will catch up and exceeded your cost in the foreseeable future.

The same goes for the 1961 $10 Malaya and British Borneo (Red Buffalo) and etc....

If you think your fate is similar like the above "one collector" you ought to change your buying pattern/strategy and dont make the same mistake or miss the boat.

1961 $10 MALAYA AND BRITISH BORNEO PMG 65EPQ SOLD FOR MYR10,815.12

The 1961 $10 Malaya & British Borneo banknotes or "Red Bufffalo" are really red sizzling hot ! As i have said before on my previous post (below) that collectors does not hesitate to pay top dollar for a nice piece of high grade UNC.

And this has proven i was correct. There was a piece of the "Red Buffalo" graded by PMG 65EPQ was auctioned on Ebay US and the auction has ended today morning (Malaysia local time 6.28am) with a realized price of USD3338.00 X 3.24exchange rate = MYR10,815.12 + USD40.00 shipping cost X 3.24exchange rate = MYR129.60 with 43bids and the seller were from New Hampshire,US. This piece of banknote was the common type of "Small serial number" and was less expensive compared with the scarcer ones such as "B" prefix variety and "Large serial number" variety.

There are total of 241 pieces were graded by PMG as of today with 13 pieces for 65EPQ and 1 piece for 66EPQ is the highest graded thus far.

With the record breaking prices i expect more collectors to send for grading and more "Red Buffaloes" will come out for sale in the near future.

1961 $10 MALAYA & BRITISH BORNEO PAIR

Currently the 1961 $10 Malaya and British Borneo locally known as Red Kerbau (red buffalo) are sizzling hot among collectors. The price has been sky rocketing lately and breaking new highs every time when there are nice UNC piece condition up for auction.

Well i also have a pair of consecutive numbers in AUNC (1piece) and UNC (1piece) condition but with slight foxing and i will be sending this pair to PMG for grading.

Besides this red kerbau pair i will also be sending some Straits Settlements banknotes in the era of King George V 1935 reign to PMG for grading as well.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR MONEY ?

Regret for not updating my blog after 2 weeks as i was quite busy with preparation of my personal and company income tax submission.

There are many (average) collectors were asking for advice what items to buy ? So i decided to put it systematically for you to have a clear perspective on where to put your money.

The current high profile numismatics items that collectors are busy chasing after are :-

1)1999 10th Series Ali Abul Hassa RM 1 Prefix "CR" (unissued)

2)1971 10sen Parliament coin

3)2007 12th Series Zeti Aziz RM50 50th anniversary of Malaysia independence

These three items are currently the most sought after by collectors.


1)1999 10th Series Ali Abul Hassa RM 1 Prefix "CR" (unissued). Mintage estimation 50,000pcs unintentionally released to commercial banks for circulation but were too late to retrieve back from the public. The serial number found were from CR 7200000 to CR 7250000.

Based on KN Boon 7th edition catalogue it was priced as RM3500.00 (UNC raw ungraded). For this graded piece 67EPQ the market price is around RM8000.00 - RM8500.00

2)1971 10sen Parliament coin. Mintage 32,236pcs minted.

Based on KN Boon 7th edition catalogue it was priced as RM500.00 (UNC raw ungraded) & RM800.00 (BU raw ungraded) respectively. However the current market price for this piece graded MS66 is around RM1500.00

3)2007 12th Series Zeti Aziz RM50 50th anniversary of Malaysia independence. Mintage 20,000pcs issued.

Based on KN Boon 7th edition catalogue it was priced as RM950.00 (UNC raw ungraded). And here is the current market price as follows :-

1)Prefix AA 00 XXXXX (2 zeroes) = RM900.00 (UNC raw ungraded) and RM1800.00 for 67EPQ

2)Prefix AA 000 XXXX (3 zeroes) = RM1500.00 (UNC raw ungraded) and RM2500.00 for 67EPQ

3)Prefix AA 0000 XXX (4 zeroes) = RM ?

4)Prefix AA 00000 XX (5 zeroes) = RM ?

Since i have high lighted the most sought after by collectors and i will also be fair to high light the most laggard and ignored by collectors.

2012 12th Series Zeti Aziz Premium set of 6 pieces from RM1 to RM100 (all denomination) with same prefix and serial number. Mintage 50,000 sets issued. Issue price RM300.00

Based on KN Boon 7th edition catalogue it was priced as RM400.00. But the current market price is between RM300.00 to RM350.00. Currently Bank Negara Malaysia still have some stocks left for sale till today at issue price.

This set was deemed the best set ever issued by Bank Negara Malaysia with its complete denomination from RM1 to RM100 with all same prefixes "AA" and serial numbers in one set. And many dealers had hoarded this set at very much higher price around RM400.00 to RM500.00 each set when it was launched to the public and the market price quickly surged to RM800.00 during the initial launching period.

Many dealers were caught at higher cost and some were seen to have cut-losses.

When will this Premium set price start to move up ? I do not know the exact time frame but based on history of the past commemorative banknotes with limited mintage like the RM50 50th anniversary of Independence of Malaysia it took 6 years (from issued date in December 2007) to 2013 to inch up slowly and then accelerated in 2014 this year. 

So if you take another 6 years for this Premium set to start moving up it will be in 2018 !

Where do you want to put your money ? It is all depending on your "holding power".

1968 50SEN MILLED EDGE SOLD FOR MYR19,435.00

With the recent concluded auction result from Collectibles Auction Asia 3/2014 auction held at Landmark Village Hotel, Singapore on 19 April 2014. (Office add : Blk 231 Bain Street 02-23 Bras Basah Complex Singapore 904965). It was once again our Malaysian Parliament coins are the favorites and sizzling hot among the coin's collectors. There were two records broken - 1)1968 50sen Milled Edge and 2)1976 1sen made of copper (or popularly know as 1 copper sen).

Malaysia 1968 50sen MILLED EDGE sold for a staggering SGD6500.00 + 15% Buyer's Premium = SGD7475.00 X 2.60exchange rate = MYR19,435.00 !!!  (1968 50sen Milled Edge Auction Price)

Another record was broken is the 1976 1sen made of copper and it was auctioned for SGD4000.00 + 15% Buyer's Premium = SGD4600.00 X 2.60exchange rate = MYR11,960.00.

The coin was graded by PCGS MS64 RB, KM-2 Bronze and it's mintage was less than 100 pieces according to Steven Tan catalogue. (1976 1sen Auction Price)

Another rising star under the radar is the Malaysia 2007 50th Anniversary of Independence raw notes without grading was sold for SGD750.00 for 2 pieces consecutive pair + 15% Buyer's Premium = SGD862.50 X 2.60exchange rate = MYR2242.50 or MYR1121.25 each piece.

The prefix and serial no. are AA 0002760 & AA 0002761 (3 zeroes). (50th Anniv Auction Price)
