MALAYSIA 1976 1SEN COPPER

It was another record sale for the 1976 1sen with an error planchet that made of copper. It was recently auctioned on Ebay US with a realized price of USD2975.00 or RM9371.25 (exchange rate 3.15 = USD1.00) on the 10th November 2013 with 29bids.

NGC population report

 

There were only four pieces achieved the highest grade of MS66 RD (Red) according to the NGC population report thus far.

On 27th March 2013, the exact same coin but with one rung lower of MS65 RD (Red) graded by PCGS was auctioned by Singapore Monetarium Auctions with a realized price of SGD3017.30 or RM7694.11 (exchange rate 2.55 = SGD1.00) inclusive of buyer's premium and GST in Singapore.

 

According to Steven Tan's catalogue it was stated that there were no more than 100pcs minted.

So what's so special about this 1sen 1976 copper coin ? It was an error planchet material used. The correct metal should be copper-clad-steel.

 

FYI, the 1sen coin was minted from 1967 to 1973 using copper but then it was changed to a different material with less expensive metal "copper-clad-steel". Because the cost of raw commodity - copper went up hence making a one cent coin more expensive than the price of 1sen. So in the year 1973 half of the entire mintage of 21,400.385 million pieces of 1sen coins were made by copper-clad-steel and copper.

 

For those "layman" who want to search for this 1976 1sen copper just use a magnet. The copper-clad-steel 1sen coin are attracted to magnet whereas the copper 1sen are NOT attracted to magnet.

MALAYSIA PARLIAMENT COINS

MALAYSIA Parliament coins are sizzling hot especially for UNC and BU condition only. Its Parliament series started from 1967 to 1988 that mean ranging from 46yrs to 25yrs ago. No interest was given to Parliament coins last three year ago, but came 2011 collectors started to take notice these coins were laggards compare with their peers - banknotes ! Malaysia 1st series banknotes starting from 1967 until 4th series 1983 banknotes are surging through the roof. Thereafter the Parliament coin series were much sought after by coin hunters.

Recently on 19 October 2013, a new record for the most expensive Malaysia circulation coins sold in Singapore auction (Numismatic Society Asia Auction at Landmark Village Hotel) a 1969 50 sen Milled edge coin sold for SGD4012 or RM10,253 (including buyer premium) was graded a low NGC MS55 (AU).

And not too distant ago in 29th Septemeber 2013 a 1969 50sen with Security Edge in UNC condition (non graded) was auctioned at MNS (Malaysiam Numismatics Society) in Kuala Lumpur for a realized price of RM2800.00 ! That is how hot you can feel and see in Malaysian numismatic scene.

And today I was extremely delighted to have received high grades for my Parliament coins from NGC. I sent 5 coins and came back with 3pcs MS67, 1pc MS66 and 1pc MS64. It is extremely tough to achieved MS67 grade.

MALAYSIA 1970 20 CENT PARLIAMENT SERIES COIN

This is the most sought after "the most important" key date by collectors in the Parliament coinage series, the 1970 20sen of having the least mintage of 1.054million pieces and was minted by Royal Mint UK. No doubt its mintage may seem huge but as for circulation coin it was considered the least mintage. Furthermore where can you find in BU condition after 44 years ? (as the time of posting this article 04/11/2013).

If you don't belief how rare to find a used or circulated 1970 20sen try breaking your piggy bank after years of "dumping" loose change into it. Tell me by commenting below how many pieces have you found ? Don't be disappointed if you can't find any (you are not the only person though). Make this a challenge for yourself since it is now school holiday season.

FYI, the Royal Mint UK have minted Malaysian coin in the period of 4 years from 1967 - 1970 thereafter it was minted by local our producer the Kilang Wang Malaysia.

MALAYSIA COMMEMORATIVE $1 COINS FROM 1969 - 1987 SET OF 16 PIECES

This complete set of denomination of $1 (Ringgit) comprises of 16 pieces in BU condition are difficult to collect in similar condition but it was not as rare as the silver proof version. The first coin was issued in 1969 in the span of 18 years to 1987, it was made of copper-nickel for BU composition and there're also proof set issued in .925 silver with the mintage of 1000 sets only.

2013 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FORMATION OF MALAYSIA

This one is the hottest commemorative coin issued by Malaysia Central Bank in recent years. Malaysia Day is celebrated on 16 September every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation which comprises 11 states in Malaya and two states in Borneo, namely Sabah and Sarawak.

Collectors were seen queuing since 6pm the day before until the bank was open at 9.00am the next day for the sale of the coins. Within two hours everything were snapped up.

The proof set of 3 with mintage of only 500sets minted were the favourite of the collectors.

The single proof 1/4oz. (7.96gms) gold coin with mintage of 750pcs minted wasn't in high demand among the collectors mainly because of the high premium over spot (USD1320.00 per ounce, exchange rate RM3.30 = USD1.00) against the issue price RM1800.00. This single coin were deemed too expensive and over valued.

The proof set of 2 (silver & nordic gold) with the mintage of 1000pcs minted were clearly the favourite by the collectors and dealers. Dealers were able to flip with almost 100% profit on the secondary market immediately. And it was sold out within 30minutes of opening.

The proof single silver with the mintage of 10,000pcs were the first coloured silver coin and with .999 pure silver minted in one ounce (31.10gms) ever produced by Malaysia. Usually the silver coins come in 21gms and contains .925 silver for every commemorative issues. I was told that up to 5000 pieces of this silver coins was given as a gift to VIPs during a function held in Sabah & Sarawak (East Malaysia) on the 16th & 17th Sept 2013 by the Prime Minister to mark the occasion of Malaysia Formation Day celebration.

The Nordic gold coin or coin card with the mintage of 25,000pcs was the most popular among the young and amateur collectors as it was the cheapest entry level into this hobby of numismatics thus making everyone affordable to collect. And it was not surprising that it was sold out within two hours upon opening of sales. I was told that this coin card was also given as a gift to every attendees during the function in Sabah and Sarawak.

MALAYSIA COIN CARDS OR NORDIC GOLD

The latest trend among Malaysian collectors are coin cards ! This crazy trend was started last year 2012 because it is cheap and affordable for everyone to collect. This theme of collection are meant for juniors and amateurs with low issue price by Bank Negara Malaysia ranging from RM5.00 to RM10.00.

But lately the appreciation of coin cards has shot up dramatically and has caught many by surprise even to seasoned collectors. And in term of percentage gain it has out perform gold and silver.
For example the Shah Alam coin card with mintage of 8000pcs issued in year 2000 with the issue price of RM5.00 to now RM650.00, and the 2007 Police coin card with mintage of 10,000pcs with issue price of RM8.00 to now RM250.00. (Picture as below).

 

 

Most of the recent year issue with mintage of 15,000pcs to 20,000pcs the price has surged to the range of RM40.00 - RM80.00 region and mintage between 20,000pcs to 25,000pcs (2012 INSTALLATION OF THE KING XIV NORDIC GOLD) the price has risen to RM30.00 - RM50.00.

With the dramatic rise of Coin Cards or Nordic Gold it has caught the interest of many Malaysians and has attracted many young collectors into this hobby of numismatics.
